Plain CSV in UTF-8, one row per figure, with stable column names. Every row names its national source. The compilation is CC BY 4.0: reuse it with the credit under Cite this. The underlying figures belong to their national publishers.

Read the data dictionary first: the same cars appear at total, brand and model level, so filter to one level before summing. RSS feed for new editions · JSON: latest.json · Past editions: /data/europe-ev-registrations/europe-ev-registrations-YYYY-MM.csv.

Methodology

What is counted. New passenger cars (M1) registered for the first time in each country during the calendar month, as published by that country’s registration authority or industry association. Used imports are excluded where the source separates them. Figures are not seasonally adjusted.

Powertrains. BEV = battery-electric only. PHEV = plug-in hybrids, including range-extender cars, following ACEA’s convention. Full and mild hybrids are not PHEV. “All” covers every fuel.

Same-country comparisons. Countries publish on different days and in different detail. Every total, share and year-on-year change on this page uses only the countries that have the needed figure in both periods, and says how many. Brand totals come from a source’s brand table or its complete model list. Top-10 lists appear per country and as minimums, and are never added into full totals. A month whose source total disagrees with the national headline by more than 2% is not used for year-on-year comparisons.

Names. Registries spell brands and models differently: KBA lists “ID.4, ID.5” together, RDW lists trade names. A published alias table maps them to one name. Where one registry merges two models, the pair keeps one combined name everywhere (for example “ID.4/ID.5”, “iX1/X1”), so the car is counted in one row. Models a registry files under another brand (Cupra under SEAT, Genesis under Hyundai at KBA) are moved to their own brand.

Revisions. Sources are rechecked three times a day until the 16th of the following month, when the edition becomes final. Later changes are listed under Corrections. First figures can move by a few units as late registrations arrive, especially at RDW and DGT.

Why totals differ from ACEA. This page covers the countries listed below, not EU-27 + EFTA + UK. ACEA publishes three to four weeks later and has no model breakdown. Country totals match each national headline to within about 1%, except where the notes below say otherwise. Spain (DGT microdata) and Poland (CEPiK register) use official register counts, which differ slightly from the industry associations’ headlines. Italy’s brand table (the national vehicle archive) runs about 1% below UNRAE’s market total.

33 months
New passenger-car registrations. Counted from the vehicle register: cars first admitted and first registered in the Netherlands in the month (used imports excluded). RDW updates daily, so counts can run ~1% above the BOVAG/RAI headline published on the 1st because of late registrations. RDW's 'Personenauto' class also holds a few motorhomes, ambulances and hearses built on car chassis (about 0.5% of the count); they cannot be separated and are included.

2024-01
33 months
New passenger-car registrations. Totals are Statistics Norway's (table 14020, new cars only, used imports excluded). BEV is SSB's 'electric/zero-emission' group, which also holds the few hydrogen cars. SSB's totals are checked against OFV's published monthly totals (export.json and OFV's monthly articles). They agree within 0.1% for most months, and the BEV shares agree to 0.1 point. Where SSB is more than 2% below OFV (May 2025 −2.8%, August 2025 −10.2%), the month is flagged as suspect and is not used as a year-on-year base. The totals are not replaced with OFV's, so the series stays one source. Norway has no free monthly plug-in-hybrid total: SSB groups plug-in and full hybrids together, so PHEV is left blank. Model figures are OFV's top-30 models (ranked by year-to-date registrations) with their monthly count, for all fuels; the market is ~98% battery-electric but the list is not split by fuel. OFV shows only the latest month and keeps no archive, so model figures exist only for months captured when they were current. Earlier months carry totals only.

New passenger-car registrations. Mobility Sweden counts new cars only; Trafikanalys' official figure also includes used imports and runs a few percent higher. BEV by model is complete (every model). PHEV by model is only available for January–February 2024; later workbooks publish the PHEV total only. Model names follow Mobility Sweden's groupings, e.g. 'VOLVO EX/XC40' and 'VW ID.7/ID.7 TOURER' are single rows.

New passenger-car registrations. Model and brand figures are for all fuels; Mobility Denmark does not split models by powertrain, so Denmark has no BEV-by-model figures. Mobility Denmark only shows the two latest months, so brand and model figures exist only for months captured while they were current. Earlier months carry Danmarks Statistik totals only. Danmarks Statistik counts about 0.3% more new cars than Mobility Denmark.

New passenger-car registrations. First registrations of new passenger cars in mainland Finland (Traficom register; Åland's separate register is not included), matching the Traficom/aut.fi headline. Motorhomes (M1 camper vans) are counted in the total but not attributed to brands; they are shown with 'Other brands (not itemised)'. PHEV = petrol/electric + diesel/electric plug-in hybrids; Traficom has no separate range-extender code.

New passenger-car registrations. BEV passenger cars are the sum of the regional passenger-car column of Avere's barometer; the market total and brands come from PFA's monthly Flash (AAA Data). PFA itemises about 40 brands; the rest (including BYD, MG and other Chinese brands) are grouped under 'Other brands (not itemised)'. PHEV is plug-in hybrid passenger cars only: Avere's headline PHEV figure covers cars and vans, and the barometer also prints the number of vans in it (a few dozen to several hundred a month), which is taken out. Models are Avere's top 10 BEV and top 10 PHEV passenger cars.

New passenger-car registrations. Counted from DGT's vehicle-level registration records: new vehicles (IND_NUEVO_USADO = 'N') of DGT type 40 'turismo'; used imports are excluded. BEV and PHEV follow the record's electric-vehicle category; range extenders (REEV) are counted as PHEV, and full hybrids (HEV) as neither. DGT counts run about 1–3% above the ANFAC figures in the press, which come from ANFAC's own registration data (August 2026: 69,400 vs 68,544 cars, 9,450 vs 9,199 BEV). Brand and model are the homologation strings (MARCA_ITV, MODELO_ITV); DGT cuts the model at 22 characters, so trim levels and truncated names are merged at normalisation.

New passenger-car registrations. Switzerland and Liechtenstein combined (the MOFIS register covers both). Brand and model totals for all fuels are month-to-month differences of auto-schweiz's year-to-date model table; Seat and Cupra are published as one brand. BEV and PHEV model rows come from the plug-in list, which is about 1% short of the official BEV total, mostly direct imports. Brands that sell only battery-electric cars (Tesla, Polestar, smart, Zeekr, XPeng, NIO, Lucid and a few others) are counted in full from the all-fuel model table, and the difference is taken out of the gap. The remaining gap is shown as 'Other brands (not itemised)'. PHEV includes range extenders.

New passenger-car registrations. Brand totals are counted; BEV by brand is an estimate derived from each brand's average CO2 with and without electric cars, and is good to a few percent per brand. Statistik Austria does not separate plug-in hybrids from other hybrids, so Austria has no PHEV figure. No model-level data is published.

New passenger-car registrations. Passenger cars include ambulances ('Ligeiros de Passageiros e Ambulâncias'), as in ACAP's headline. BEV and PHEV are passenger-car-only figures from ACAP's energy table; PHEV = PHEV/Gasolina + PHEV/Gasóleo. ACAP publishes no brand × fuel split for passenger cars alone and no model data. ACAP only keeps the current month's files online; earlier months come from ACAP press releases and have totals only.

New passenger-car registrations. Registrations as reported by SIMI, the figures ACEA and Irish media use. Until September 2026 this page used CSO table TEM28 (new private cars licensed for the first time), which differs from SIMI by month (August 2026: CSO 10,924 cars vs SIMI 7,791). SIMI's database is live, so a month can move by a few units after the press release as late registrations and corrections arrive. 'Electric' is counted as BEV; 'Petrol/Plug-In Electric Hybrid' and 'Diesel/Plug-In Electric Hybrid' as PHEV. Non-plug-in hybrids are in neither.

New passenger-car registrations (BEV by model; total for all powertrains). Counted from the CEPiK vehicle register: passenger cars first registered in Poland in the month whose origin is 'new bought in Poland' or 'new individual import'; used imports are excluded. Only battery-electric cars are itemised by model. CEPiK has no plug-in hybrid flag, so Poland has no PHEV figure. The register is read later than the PZPM/Samar figures, which also come from CEPiK, and includes individual imports of new cars, so it runs a few percent higher (August 2026 BEV: 2,273 vs 2,189, +3.8%). CEPiK leaves the brand empty for makes missing from its brand list (e.g. Leapmotor, Xpeng, Omoda); these are filled from unambiguous model names, and the rest are shown as an unknown brand.

New passenger-car registrations. Counts all new M1 registrations, including motorhomes on an M1 base (e.g. Adria, Bürstner), exactly as SDA's headline does. Chinese brand classification

Tier 1, “Chinese brands” (the headline figure): brands headquartered or developed in China. That includes European companies that sell rebadged Chinese cars (DR, Evo, Ebro, Sportequipe) and Lynk & Co. Tier 2, “Chinese-owned”: European-heritage brands controlled by a Chinese group. Dropping the rebadgers and Lynk & Co moves the headline share by a few tenths of a point. The list is versioned in the classification CSV.

  • 5 July 2024: provisional countervailing duties on battery-electric cars built in China.
  • 31 October 2024: definitive duties in force for five years (Implementing Regulation (EU) 2024/2754): BYD 17.0%, Geely 18.8%, SAIC 35.3%, Tesla (Shanghai) 7.8%, other cooperating makers 20.7%, all on top of the 10% import duty. Plug-in hybrids are not covered.
  • 10 February 2026: the Commission accepts the first minimum-price undertaking in place of duties (Volkswagen Anhui’s Cupra Tavascan).

Corrections and revisions
